January 6th Update
It’s been two months since a riot at the United States Capitol maligned a cherished day, my late mother’s birthday. I’m still feeling the heaviness of that day as if it were yesterday.
On January 6th, I was doubly sad – partly because I miss Mom and this was the day to remember her and perform random acts of kindness in her honor, and partly because I witnessed the Capitol chaos caused by swirling allegations of a fraudulent presidential election. From then to now, I have wondered if and how our country would remove the stain smeared on the day January 6th. Not only did I want the day sanitized for personal reasons, but I wanted our national image and global standing restored. After all, historically the U.S. has stood for democratic, free elections and has denounced election terrorism.
As we pass March 6th, I am still wondering. Thus far, accountability for the Capitol riot has yet to be ascribed. We, as a country, cannot even agree on who is responsible despite videos of trespassers breaking and entering the Capitol. In fact, I am questioning whether January 6th is permanently, irreversibly tarnished. I hope not.
